Research chair : Sustainable Long-Distance Mobility Chair

The aim of the Sustainable Long-Distance Mobility Chair is to carry out research into the land-based mobility of the future, with a view to making it low-carbon and connected.

The Sustainable Long-Distance Mobility Chair at the Paris School of Economics is supported by the Programme d’investissements d’avenir operated by the French Agency for Ecological Transition as part of a consortium led by BlaBlaCar.

Objectives

The aim of the Sustainable Long-Distance Mobility Chair is to develop a research project on the land-based mobility of the future, with a view to making it low-carbon and connected. It focuses on the study of “Mobility as a Service” (MaaS) platforms offering users journeys based on low-carbon means of transport.

The research carried out is mainly in the field of industrial economics, but also draws on other disciplinary fields such as environmental economics and behavioral economics. Empirical work can also benefit from unique data, both in terms of quantity and quality, thanks to the ease of collection offered by these digital platforms.

Four main research themes are explored:

  • the study of MaaS user behavior (preferences, cognitive biases, etc.), both in their current form and under the various evolutions they may undergo;
  • the various choices involved in platform design: pricing methods, information passed on to users, etc.;
  • interactions and contractual relations between different platforms will constitute a third field of study;
  • environmental and societal impacts.

Activities

The chair’s program includes a number of activities:

  • organizing events to present and discuss work at the frontier of international research;
  • funding postdoctoral fellows.

BlaBlacar is the world’s largest long-distance car-sharing community. The French startup connects drivers traveling with free spaces with passengers wishing to make the same journey. The cost of the journey is shared between carpoolers.

The French Agency for Ecological Transition is a public establishment under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. ADEME advises, facilitates and helps finance a wide range of projects in all fields, from research to the sharing of solutions.
