Laboratory : J-PAL Europe

J-PAL Europe is committed to the fight against poverty by ensuring that social policies are based on scientific evidence.

J-PAL Europe is the European branch of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab.

Introducing J-PAL

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab brings together researchers affiliated with universities around the world. It is organized into seven regional offices, hosted by local universities.

Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee (winners of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics) co-founded the European branch of J-PAL in 2008.

Using its network of affiliated professors based in Europe and beyond, the laboratory works with governments and civil society players. Together, they conduct rigorous impact assessments of social programs.

The Lab also collaborates with J-PAL offices around the world to provide evidence-based information to development actors on the continent.

As part of Labex OSE, the laboratory has privileged links with the Institut des Politiques Publiques.

Objective

As such, the laboratory has several missions:

  • conducting randomized evaluations ;
  • developing partnerships around evidence-based public policies;
